National debt (late)

I'm not a big political guy and I'm no expert on the economy but this is just what makes sense to me. Now, the two main approaches to this, raising taxes and cutting spending, are sort of polar opposites. So why not take a bit of both? Raising taxes at least a little bit would definitely help. In fact, taxing new things wouldn't be such a bad idea either. At least a couple of drugs - marijuana comes to mind - could be legalized and taxed (some should not be legalized obviously). Now on the other side, some particular groups would love to have mass cutting of spending. While it would work in theory, I don't think it'd the best idea. We could cut spending a bit, because I'm sure there are some things we could do without. But at the same time, if we cut too much, problems we had in the past could arise again. If that makes sense. Don't just take my word for it.
