Many people have done well to forget about the devastation caused by this hurricane just six years ago. This picture sends a powerful message about the ways that the hurricane affected so many people. This was taken not too long after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans. We can see a man hugging his grandson as they grieve over their losses. We really have no way to understand what they are going through other than what we take from this photograph. Their house held many memories for them. Now, they no longer have a place to live. Their home and refuge is gone, and their whole life will never be the same. We can work for years to build a home and life, and it can all be taken away in a few minutes. This picture just captures one story of a family's loss. Thousands of others, just outside the frame of the photograph, grieve for their losses as well. Even though it has been six years, parts of New Orleans and Mississippi have not fully rebuilt. This photograph is a solemn reminder of what these people had to go through.
