Flags of Our Fathers

This photograph captures a moment that was very important to American history. This picture was taken by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal in Iwo Jima during World War II. This battle was a turning point in World War II.

Although this was a high point during World War II, the picture itself was used less to showcase a moment and more to reignite a fire in the American people. When this photograph was spread throughout America, people felt a renewed sense of patriotism and loyalty to their country. This picture really helped to encourage people to become involved with the war effort.

This picture became so iconic in the United States that authors and screenplay writers created stories from it. A book called Flags of Our Fathers was written by the son of one of the men in the photograph. Shortly after the book was published, Steven Spielberg acquired its film rights.
