How often I use my iPod
I don't use my ipod or iphone as much as most people, primarily because I dislike earbuds and nice headphones are too expensive for me to invest in. Yet, I listen to music for several hours everyday. On the drive to school to and from school, I listen to music for around twenty minutes each. When I do my homework, I have to listen to music or my concentration wanders. And, of course, in order to fall asleep, I have to listen to a five to ten minute ballad or I can't relax.
I have dozens of perfect playlists. My favorite and most edited are my lawnmowing songs, my angry songs, relaxed songs, depressing songs, studying songs, womping songs, and then my average playlist that varies my favorite songs.
My favorite song is something that I often try to figure out, always to no avail. But the criteria for my favorite songs are that they must be an anthem and/or epic, have to have significance, and for the sake of personal strife, are limited to one song per artist.
Konstantine - Something Corporate
This song is one of the most spirited an compelling pieces ever written. It is significant for me because it is the song that single-handedly represents Andrew McMahon's musical intellect. It is an 9, 11, 15 or 21 minute epic, depending on the version. I generally just listen to the 9:30 second version. It embodies all of Something Corporates work and Jack's Mannequin's current work. Cavanaugh Park and La La Lie competed against this song, which was chosen from around 60 songs that I have from McMahon.
Tuesday's Gone- Lynyrd Skynyrd
NO WAY!!! Not Freebird?! Not Sweet Home Alabama? Skynyrd has literally dozens of long-lasting and meaningful songs. T for Texas, Simple Man, and The Ballad of Curtis Loew are also personal favorites. But out of all of these songs, Tuesday's Gone is the most meaningful to me. The melody, speed and overall feeling of the song are features that I enjoy.
What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie
Choosing this song was brutal for me. As an avid Death Cab fan, I had 55 songs to chose from, not to mention my Postal Service collection. Unfortunately, Transatlanticism, Cath..., Crooked Teeth, Marching Bands of Manhattan, The New Year, TIny Vessels, Your New Twin Sized Bed and Brothers on a Hotel Bed couldn't all be picked. But Transaltanticism and Brothers on a Hotel Bed could easily be interchanged with What Sarah Said. They are all beautifully written, piano driven songs, all around six minutes long, and all very meaningful. However What Sarah Said takes the cake due to the significance of the message in the song to me personally.
Sing For The Moment - Eminem
Eminem... not quite going along with the theme of the other top five songs. However, I believe that Eminem is a very skilled and unique musician. Sigur Ros is a great band but after three hours, three nights in a row, I need a little variety. Eminem can always provide that. Eminem goes crazy in some songs, screaming absurd lyrics. Other times, he makes political messages through symbolism. Finally, he shows his sad side. All three of these are usually rolled into one CD. Sing For The Moment is a blend of these, mainly playing on the second and third types. Each verse of this song has important messages embedded in it. Certain messages in this song don't mean much to me, but others speak volumes in just in couplet by Eminem.
23 - Jimmy Eat World
A classic. The definition of youth struggle and growing up. Yeah, Hear You Me, The Middle, Sweetness and Work are all great and loved by critics. But just the opening rift of this song is something special that you can lose yourself in. The lyrics of the song are deeply personal yet they say different things to every person that has heard this song. Its a unique song that I recommend anyone to listen to, because we all get different responses out of it. But please, the 7:25 or 7:30 song. The 3 minute shortened version destroys the art.
