Good vs. Evil
We have been raised in a society, where good and evil have been painted as constantly in battle against one another. However, I disagree with this ideology as I believe these two aspects of life coexist and depend on one another. Without any evil in the world, how could define what is good? We couldn't, frankly. Same goes for if the world did not possess any good. Each and every individual on this planet contains characteristics that embody either good or evil. Without having both, we really wouldn't be human. For example, in the late 90's, former President Bill Clinton was accused of having a sexual affair with a White House employee. This action was widely considered to be dishonorable and he was later impeached. For a short period of time following his impeachment, Clinton was painted as this selfish leader who was more focused on satisfying his personal needs than the needs of his constituents. But in 2009, Clinton did something unexpected that sort of revitalized his public image. Earlier that year, two American reporters had been detained in North Korea for trespassing, and the North Korean government was adamant in keeping them as prisoners. Although the US government tried to intervene and alleviate the situation, their efforts proved to be futile. Former President Clinton, however, took it upon himself to meet with Kim Jong Il, leader of North Korea, and successfully negotiated the release of the two reporters. His actions were viewed as being selfless, and he was classified as being a true American hero. Both of these situations depict how people can be good and evil. Infact, its entirely normal to have both of these entities within you. Sure, it is more beneficial to yourself and society when you act in a more "good" nature, however, occasionally doing something selfishly or spitefully isn't necessarily wrong, it's just bad. I believe learning to balance both good and evil is necessary, and we should stop viewing them as being adversaries, but instead partners that can help decide a person's aptitude.
