Good vs. Evil

I honestly don't know whether I believe in absolute good and evil. Good and evil in reality certainly aren't as clear cut as it is depicted in Harry Potter or Star Wars. Today is the tenth anniversary of 9/11. We all know the absolutely evil thing that occurred that day, however, if you look at the event from the perspective of the terrorists; they thought they were doing a good thing. Now, I would NEVER come even close to saying that they had reason to kill thousands of people, but in their warped minds… they were doing what was right. This brings up the question of how to define good and evil. I think that there are certain things (such as killing, raping, stealing, etc.) that are absolutely bad. Evil is probably easier to define than good, but even with evil it’s hard to draw the line sometimes. Take killing for example. If you kill for self defense, it’s not a bad thing. You’re just defending yourself.

Good is even more subjective. Trying hard to get good grades is good, as long as it doesn’t lead to cheating. Working hard to earn your money is considered good as long as you don’t work hard to earn it through illegal means such as dealing drugs. Doing things that benefit society is always good, but what is good or evil is really subjective. However, I would disagree with those who say there is no war between good and evil. I believe most people try to do good, and those who don’t are usually fought by the ones who do try to do good.
