1. Where do you see yourself in 15 years? (I'll be almost 32)
2. If you were to create a product that could fix something in life (whether it be big or small) without any limitations of what is possible in real life, what would it be and what would it look like?
3. You are creating a time capsule for yourself to open on your 50th birthday. What 10 things do you put in it and why?
I think I'll answer prompt #3.
On April 1, 2011, I received a letter in the mail from my grandmother (I call her Mama Brown). I thought it was odd because I generally only get mail from her on my birthday. I opened it to find a piece of writing that we did together from 2002 (I was 7/8 ish). I instantly recalled those fun times sitting at the computer, orating a story while she typed it. Lo and behold, my grammar was awful and I was not the best on staying on track, but I love that my grandmother did not edit it at all. She wrote exactly what I said aloud, including for sentences such as "And we made popcorn while the ball game was going on, and it overflowed. We used two buckets - one of the buckets had a big mountain and the other one was half of half of popcorn." I found this to be comical, and loved to see how my storytelling abilities have grown these past eight years.
This letter instantly sent a wave of nostalgia over me. It really includes all the special times I remember spending with my grandparents: from gardening to my breakfast menus slid under the door to their neighbors and friends. I will cherish this letter forever, and this is definitely an activity that I will pass on to my children and grandchildren.
This led me to think about a time capsule response. This would be a way to remind myself those little details that I will never remember about my teenage years. Things like what my favorite TV shows were and what I liked to do in my spare time (or lack thereof) are easily forgotten, and feel so good to remember them.
1. Jodi Picoult book (probably A Change of Heart) because this is a book that I really liked to read, and I know I would enjoy re-reading it as an adult.
2. Secret Sister CD from last year because it has all those fun, dancy songs that I love to listen to in my car. It also holds memories from cross country because it includes most of the songs we sang together as a team - just to be silly - and was given to me by a member of the team (Emma).
3. 68 Days of Serendipity (my summer blog) printed out because it would be really neat to see all the activities I did this summer, along with reading my writing and seeing pictures that I have.
4. My Agenda because it shows my handwriting and organization system along with doodles, not to mention all the activities and events that were important to me for a whole school year.
5. "My Year in Facebook Statuses" because it shows what I think is important enough to tell the world, which can be anything from "made a sandwich" to "is so proud of her xc girls today!"
6. My Confirmation Bible because this Bible has gone through A LOT. I think it was originally a soft pale green and light blue. It is now an awkward gray-ish teal color. I don't know how. Anyway, this also has tons of stuff stuck in its pages from my letters from the confirmation retreat (from friends and family talking about how I've grown and they love me and etc.) to prayer requests lists, a plethora of bookmarks, etc. Religion is really a big part of my life, and this Bible gives a preview of my religious life as it is now.
7. Starlight Singers Music Book because I'm sure I would love to relive all my Lexington Children's Theatre Starlight Singers memories, and see what kind of musical theatre songs I was singing and working on at the time.
8. Head Shot & Theatre Resume because it not only would give me physical descriptions (height, weight, etc.) but it also would remind me of what shows I have done along with training and other performances.
9. Collection of Baking Recipes & Pictures because I love to bake and do it pretty often. I'm sure I will love to when I'm older too, and will probably lose all my favorite recipes from now. It would be really interesting to see what my favorite things to make were, as well as seeing all my baking projects (which are mostly pretty creative, if you ask me).
10. French Project (Video) because I actually plan to pursue my French studies into college and the rest of my life. I would love to become fluent and vacation many more times in French-speaking countries. I plan on teaching my children to speak French, and this would be really fun to see how I have grown as a French speaker and conversationalist.
Again with the long-winded blog post, but I kind of put two in one here. Nostalgia just makes me want to write and write!
