October 8

On October 8, 2001, President George W. Bush announced the formation of what we now know as the Department of Homeland Security, as a response to the terrorism attacks on our country just a few weeks prior. As a country, we were in a state of vulnerability and our government saw this department as a step forward from our problems. This was a very necessary move for the United States, because we didn't know if or when there would be another attack. This department had to be set up to ensure that all precautions would be taken to protect the citizens of the country.
The announcement of this department had an imminent influence on our lives as Americans. The Department of Homeland Security has already prevented further attacks on this nation, saving thousands of lives. The department has over 200,000 employees, making it the third largest Cabinet department. What impact has this had on me? Well, being stopped in the airport every time I travel I suppose. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the nation safe.
I appreciate that President Bush made this move at the time, because who knows where we would be as a nation if our guard had been left down. And hopefully the impact that this formation had on our nation will continue to grow.
